Education Scholarship
Education Scholarship Program
The first CEF Scholarship Program was in the mountains of Quang Nam province near the Vietnam-Laos border in Phuoc Son District where Gie Trieng are the main ethnic group.
Trafficking takes place in Vietnam mainly in the mountains and along the borders where there is poor literacy, with many parents and grandparents having had little or no education, and school attendance is poor there. The goal is to keep girls from these communities in high school by providing a scholarship for each of them.
We have gradually been developing this program each year to include more support. Four years ago we added extra tuition sessions in English, literature and math for the ethnic girls from these communities who are in our Scholarship Program there. Our goal is to help them receive that little extra educational support to lift their school grades. If they can increase them enough they will be eligible for a university education and this will truly change their lives.
When we started we had no idea if this program would be successful, but not 176 students have completed their high school education due to the financial support they have received. Now we give scholarships to 40-45 hard-working high school students from these very poor ethnic families who live in this border region. Poverty here is mainly due to the terrain being hard to work, and the isolation of these communities and lack of work opportunities anywhere near by. Most families here struggle to make ends meet as they are subsistence farmers and often suffer from poor weather conditions which destroys their crops. Last year many families had a terrible year as their farming land up in the mountains was washed away.
Most families farm way up in the mountains and they have to trek for 2-4 hours to reach it. They camp there for several days until the work required at the time is complete. It's a hard life.
A new program, our second Scholarship Program, is in Dong Giang, another mountainous district in Quang Nam Province, where most of the ethnic communities are Co Tu. This programs started in August 2022 to help many of the ethnic students from a high school who are from poor families, doing well with their studies and have an ambition to complete high school and go onto university.
Another new program, our third Scholarship Program is in Hiep Duc District, once more a mountainous district of Quang Nam Province, where several different ethnic communities live, including Xa-Dang and HMong. This program also started in August 2022 to help a small group of the poorest and best students in this high school who are ambitious and want to be empowered to be in a position to break the poverty cycle of generations.
With all Scholarship Programs Career Guidance is provided, to help the students find a career they feel both enthusiastic about, and one that they also are capable of. After this coming academic year we will add more education support for the students in the new Scholarship Programs, depending on what is most needed. Some of the additions could be providing free extra tuition, a Communication Skills Workshop, and the Girls to Women Workshop which includes female health, hygiene, family planning and information on sexual diseases.
These two new programs funds are being raising funds to be able to give the support needed. Please see the Donate page for information on donating and please say what your donation is for when donating. A tax receipt will be sent upon receipt of funds.
A scholarship is just US$300 a year and scholarship donors will receive annual photos and an update on the program.
