Our Programs - Education Scholarship
CEF has a scholarship program in the mountains of Quang Nam province near the Vietnam-Laos border in Phuoc Son district.
Trafficking takes place in Vietnam mainly in the mountains and along the borders where there is poor literacy, with many parents and grandparents having had little or no education, and school attendance is poor there. Our goal is to keep girls from these communities in high school by providing a scholarship for each of them.
We plan to gradually develop this program each year to include more support. Last year we added extra tuition sessions in English, literature and math for the ethnic girls from these communities who are in our scholarship program. Our goal is to help them receive that little extra educational support to lift their school grades. If they can increase them enough they will be eligible for a university education and this will truly change their lives.
Each year we give scholarships to 25-35 hard-working high school students from these very poor families who live in this border region. Poverty here is mainly due to the terrain being hard to work, and the isolation of these communities and lack of work opportunities anywhere near by. Most families here struggle to make ends meet as they are subsistence farmers and often suffer from poor weather conditions which destroys their crops. For many families this year was a bad one as their farming land up in the mountains was washed away.
Most families farm way up in the mountains and they have to trek for 2-4 hours to reach it. They camp there for several days until the work required at the time is complete. It is a hard life.
A scholarship is just US$200 a year and scholarship donors will receive annual photos and an update on the program.
